Mad Men, the meticulously crafted ’60s drama where every cigarette ash placement and whiskey glass was a testament to cinematic artistry, finally swaggered onto HBO Max on Monday, December 1st. The network, having acquired all seven seasons from Lionsgate Television, celebrated its arrival in 4K Ultra HD.
HBO Max proudly proclaimed: “This marks the first time the series is available to stream in 4K, giving audiences and longtime Mad Men fans the opportunity to enjoy the series’ authentically-crafted elements with crisp detail and enhanced visual clarity.”
And oh, they delivered on the crisp detail. Just… not the elements they intended.
Fans tuning into Season 1, Episode 7, titled ‘Red in the Face’, were treated to an alternative view of the show. In the famously agonizing scene where Roger Sterling, played by John Slattery, unleashes a full oyster-and-martini fury onto the expensive office carpet after a 23-flight power walk, the enhanced visual clarity provided an unprecedented sight.
A very visible, modern-day tech operators, off-camera in the original AMC broadcast, can be clearly viewed assisting Roger’s puking performance.
According to sources, incorrect files were delivered to HBO Max. Series producer Lionsgate Television is in the process of getting the right ones to the streamer, and the scene in question will be updated soon.
