“I’m clearly dealing with grief and sadness by overcompensating with anger and funny.” A deep look at the life of a comedian. Utopia has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled Are We Good?, a compelling look at the life of comedian / actor / podcaster Marc Maron. After decades running his mega famous podcast, Maron announced he’d be retiring from his podcast and shutting down WTF. In the film, comic and podcast pioneer Marc Maron reflects on loss and growth, life, disillusionment and more, after the death of his partner, Lynn Shelton, the filmmaker who passed away in 2020 at age 54. As he processes grief & crafts comedy, he revisits his career, family struggles, and the evolving comedy world at age 60. Including exclusive interviews with comics including Nate Bargatze, John Mulaney, David Cross, Michaela Watkins, W. Kamau Bell, Laurie Kilmartin, Sam Lipsyte, Brendan McDonald. And also featuring WTF podcast footage from his interviews with President Barack Obama, Andrew Garfield, Patton Oswalt and many more. The film follows the life of comic and podcast pioneer Marc Maron. Loss and growth take center stage as he struggles to evolve in the wake of deep tragedy. The passing of his partner and filmmaker Lynn Shelton weighs on Marc, as the film picks up a year later. We follow him on a self-reflective journey as he builds an hour of comedy, while processing grief both on-stage and off. It chronicles his career from the 80’s with Sam Kinison through many career obstacles that eventually led him to the legacy-defining podcast; WTF with Marc Maron. Looking back over his life at 60, Marc reconciles with a declining father, a changing comedy landscape & the prospect of retirement. Are We Good? is a doc made by Steven Feinartz, director of the films Eddie Pepitone: For the Masses and Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark previously, plus many other short films. Produced by Steven Feinartz, Julie Seabaugh, Ethan Goldman. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year.
