Meta is reportedly exploring the development of AI-powered smartwatches and earbuds with built-in cameras. The social media giant is also working on AR glasses that could launch around 2027.
Before that, Meta will launch high-end smart glasses with a built-in display as soon as this year.
Meta AR glasses may debut in 2027
Meta currently offers the Ray-Ban smart glasses featuring a 12MP camera and Meta AI. While impressive, these are not AR glasses and do not directly compete with the Apple Vision Pro.
However, Meta is working on its first AR product — smart glasses, codenamed “Artemis” — which could debut in 2027 at the earliest. The Bloomberg report says the company “still needs to overcome challenges relating to costs, display technology and manufacturing before actually shipping it.”
Apple’s smart glasses are also rumored to launch around the same time.
But before the AR glasses, Meta will launch a new high-end glasses codenamed “Hypernova.” Due to debut later this year, the glasses will feature a display on the bottom of the right lens. It will project basic information to the wearer’s view, like notifications and photos. The glasses will cost much more than the $299 Meta Ray-Bans, though, with sources indicating a $1,000 price tag.
The report indicates Meta is again considering launching a smartwatch this year. It would pair with Ray-Ban glasses and display pictures taken with them.
Meta is also working on an AirPods rival
Rumors suggest Apple will add IR cameras to the AirPods in the future for AI and hand-gesture detection. Meta is reportedly also working on similar earbuds with built-in cameras and AI integration.
The product, internally referred to as “Camera Buds,” is still in the early stages of development. It is unlikely to hit the market for a few more years. And Meta may cancel the project altogether if it cannot solve the issues it is facing. With recent prototypes, Meta engineers have been unhappy with the camera’s angle.
